Whether you’re a seasoned designer or a complete newbie, this FAQ guide will walk you through the basics you need to know to get your shop up and running. From understanding the basics of POD to creating stunning designs that sell, we’ve got you covered. Plus, we’ll introduce you to our Timeless Edition collection—an unbeatable resource packed with classic, always-in-style designs available at 77% off this month.
What is Print On Demand (POD) and how does it work?
Print On Demand (POD) is a service where products are only printed once an order is placed. This means no upfront inventory costs and less risk. You create designs, upload them to a POD platform such as Printful and Gelato, and they handle printing, shipping, and customer service for you. It’s a fantastic way to start a business or simply test out ideas you have for posters, t shirts and more.
Do I need design software?
Ideally, yes - but not necessarily. Programs like Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop would be perfect (or the budget competitor to Adobe, Affinity). Don't get scared by the steep learning curve of these two - if you get ready made assets, all you need is to learn how to resize, add text and export! Our Timeless Edition comes with premade posters as well, so if you choose to start with our assets, you won't need to do much at all.
Where do I get designs?
There is multiple ways - draw it yourself, hire a designer or buy premade designs. This is where our Timeless Edition collection comes in. With 2000+ illustrations, objects, premade posters, textures, and color palettes, you’ll have all the tools to create stunning, timeless posters that sell.
We excel in creating trends and products for small businesses like yourself and want to give you something that you can work with for a long time. The Timeless Edition of course comes with premade posters, but the addition of textures, colour palettes and more you can mix and match to make completely new and unique designs. Packed with classic, always-in-style designs, it’s the perfect start to your poster shop.
Where can I have my stuff printed?
Sign up for a POD platform, such as Printful, Redbubble, or Gelato to handle production and shipping. If possible, test out prints with each platform that you can, so you can pick and choose quality wise. Don't forget to give some thought to paper quality as well, as you'll have to choose between standard paper and giclée printing (which lasts much longer and is museum/gallery grade).
Do I need a website?
Yes and no. You can choose to simply connect your POD platform with an Etsy shop (easy, less work, bigger fees) or something more independent, such as Shopify (intermediate, more work, less fees).
Don't forget we live in the golden era of social media - you can also choose to be more alternative and use your Instagram or TikTok as a makeshift shop front!
How do I create designs that sell?
It all boils down to the following:
- Research Trends: Check what’s popular on platforms like Pinterest and Instagram (or to get ahead of the game, check out our trend reports).
- Target Audience: Know who you’re designing for. What themes and styles resonate with them? Try and specialise for e.g. boho, hospitality or commercial interiors. The more niche, the better.
-
Use Quality Graphics: Our Timeless Edition collection includes 360 premade posters and additional colour palettes to ensure your designs are not just trendy but also timeless and unique. Mix, match, and recolor to keep your designs fresh and appealing. Alternatively, you can also book in a design intensive with us to develop exclusive prints just for you.
How do I set up my online store?
- Design Your Store: Use a clean, attractive theme that highlights your posters. Whether you're going for minimalist or maximalist artwork, make sure your shop reflects this.
- Add Products: Upload your designs and product details to your store.
- Set Pricing: Factor in POD costs, your desired profit margin, and competitor pricing.
- Promote Your Store: The usual of course works: use social media, email marketing, and SEO to drive traffic to your shop. But be creative - make WIP videos, showcase how to style and combine your posters in interiors. Don't just sell your product, sell the aesthetic of interior that your customers are looking for.
Starting your own print-on-demand poster shop is an exciting and rewarding venture. With the right tools, like the Timeless Edition collection, and a bit of creativity, you can create a successful business that brings joy to your customers and profits to you. Good luck!
